HAYOTS ASHKHARH: EXPENSIVE POWER GENERATION CONTINUES IN ARMENIA
09:11 * 17.09.14
Below is an excerpt from the paper's editorial commenting on the
observed surge in the electric power prices.
The specific weight of dear energy continues increasing in Armenia's
electric power generation system. That naturally raises the pressure
on the final prices.
It is noteworthy that the recent surge in the power prices was caused
by the distribution networks' decision to buy dear energy. That caused
a deficit of 16 billion Drams (approx $40,000) in the system. And in
order to bridge it, extra resources were needed. So the 10% surge in
the tariffs became the only source,
Though the generation of expensive power was one of the main reason
behind the recent surge in the power prices, the trend continues
to date.
The problem is particularly observed in the Hrazdan hydropower plant
and the 5th energy bloc.
After the recent surge, the price [per kilowatt] power is 37 Drams in
the former and 40 Drams in the latter (approx $0,010). Incomparably
less expensive is the price at the Yerevan Hydropower Plant (18.1
Drams or $0,04).
The decline in the power generation continues this year. Official
data suggest that it dropped by 4.2% in the first seven months.
