In his congratulatory letter to Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on
the occasion of the Day of Independence of Armenia, French President
Francois Hollande touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
He wished success in the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Armenia's News.am agency reported.
"I wish that the negotiations on the Karabakh settlement, in which
France is involved as a co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, positively
resolve in the near future," Hollande said in the letter.
"For this purpose I am glad to invite you to Paris at the end of
October," the letter said.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan are expected to meet in late October at the initiative of
French president.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in
1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a
result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied
20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and
seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs
of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently
holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.
