HAYPOST PUTS INTO CIRCULATION NEW STAMP DEDICATED TO ARMENIAN GENOCIDE CENTENNIAL: JOINT ISSUE ARMENIA-CYPRUS

Within the framework of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide,
Cyprus Post and HayPost cancelled and put into circulation two stamps
on the 2nd of April, 2015, picturing the Melkonian Orphanage and its
orphans. The stamps have been put into circulation under the heading
"Melkonian Orphanage," as a part of the theme "Centennial of the
Armenian Genocide. Joint Issue Armenia-Cyprus," the press service of
"HayPost" CJSC reports.
The solemn ceremony of the stamp cancellation in Armenia was carried
out by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of
Armenia Mr. Shavarsh Kocharyan, the Deputy Minister of Transport and
Communication of the Republic of Armenia Mr. Gagik Tadevosyan, the
Chairman of the Armenian Philatelic Association Mr. Hovik Musayelyan
and the Acting Chief Executive Officer of "HayPost" CJSC Mr. Haik
Avagyan.
One of the stamps depicts the building of the Melkonian Orphanage and
the trees planted by the orphans in memory of their parents. The other
stamp depicts the first orphans at the background of the Melkonian
Orphanage building.
The Melkonian Educational Institute was established by Melkonian
brothers on February 15th 1924 as an orphanage in Cyprus, providing
shelter to hundreds of survivors of the Armenian Genocide.
In 1925 the Melkonian Orphanage (Nicosia) received the first 103
orphans; later the orphanage became known as the Melkonian Institute.
