In an interview with Tert.am, the Free Democrats party's leader,
Khahchatur Kokobelyan, evaluated as positive the US ambassador's
recent call for developing and deepening business and economic
relations with Armenia.
The politician particularly hailed Richard Mills' initiativeto meet
with Armenian businessmen at the 14th trade financial academy in HSBC
Bank, considering the move encouraging especially for those wishing
represent their products on the international market.
"The results are tangible on the US Government's level, so I believe
we'll soon see tangible outcomes also in terms of intensifying and
developing the turnover with Armenia. Today, unfortunately, the
Armenia-West - I mean -US - turnover isn't on the top level. In this
respect - given the United States' economy, as well as the presence
and potential of our Diaspora there - what we have isn't enough," he
said, hailing the process launched under the former ambassador.
Shortly after taking over his duties in late-2014, Ambassador Mills
actively embarked on his mission and even managed to comment on the
domestic political developments in Armenia. His statements drove
certain political circles to the thought that the US is pursuing
proactive policies in Armenia and in the region in general (given that
the newly-appointed US Ambassador in Baku began his mission in the
same spirit).
Asked whether Armenia enjoys enough independence today to sign a new
agreement with the EU (in light of the repeatedly voiced allegations
that the country coordinates the new Armenia-EU document with Russia
and Russian State Duma Speaker Sergey Naryshkin's reported call for
avoiding "playing tricks"), Kokobelyan said he doesn't find such
interventions by Russia appropriate and permissible. "I also find it a
propaganda pressure, because it's an open secret that in the difficult
economic conditions it faces today, Russia cannot but try to
interconnect the other [EEU member states' potentials]," he noted.
Kokobelyan said he finds Russian President Vladimir Putin's call for
launching a united currency part of such policies, but added that the
country has to realize that Armenia needs to be independent and free
from.
Kokobelyan said he doesn't think that the Russian efforts to restrict
the Armenian, as well as Georgian markets' access to developed
countries will be crowned with success.
