Speech by President Serzh Sargsyan during the dinner served on behalf
of the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Holy See in honor
of the President of the Republic of Armenia
Your Holiness, Catholicos of All Armenians,
Your Holiness, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia,
Your Beatitude Catholicos Patriarch Nerses Petros XIX of the House of Cilicia,
Mr. Ambassador,
Dear representatives of the Armenian community,
Dear gathered,
I am more than happy to have the opportunity to meet with you and
enjoy this warm atmosphere during this visit that includes many
events. As in all countries, the Armenian community in Italy also
plays a huge role in the development of the friendly bilateral
relations.
The evidence of the Armenian presence in Italy traces back to
centuries, especially after the adoption of Christianity, the two
nations became the bearers of the same value system.
Addressing the representatives of the Armenian community in this hall,
I would like to express gratitude to our compatriots in Italy who, by
living, working hard and creating in Italy for decades, have become an
important part of this country and keep the reputation of the Armenian
people high with their daily pro-national activities and contribute to
further development of the Armenian-Italian relations.
Dear gathered,
History is turning its pages, conveying a new nature to the historic
Armenian-Italian relations hinged on mutual trust and respect, and a
new quality was conveyed to those relations after the restoration of
Armenia's independence. Today, we have a full agenda and new programs
for cooperation. My visit to Italy and the Holy See is not by chance
since it is ahead of the major events dedicated to the Centennial of
the Armenian Genocide, which will begin in Armenia in a couple of
days. For us it is very important that the leader of the Catholic
world, Pope Francis of Rome will say a prayer to God for the martyrs
of the Armenian Genocide at St. Peter's Basilica tomorrow. We are very
grateful to His Holiness, Pope Francis for the idea of this
unprecedented Holy Mass that is taking place two weeks ahead of the
canonization by our Armenian Apostolic Church of the victims of the
Armenian Genocide, symbolizing the solidarity of the Christian world
with our people.
For us Armenians, international recognition of the Armenian Genocide
is not just the condemnation of one of the greatest crimes ever
perpetrated against humanity, or the condemnation of those who planned
and perpetrated the first genocide of the 20th century. Our struggle
is first and foremost to return to the civilized world and mankind the
greatest values of love, happiness, faith, trust, hope and warmth that
has been lacking in the world as a result of the greatest crime.
Dear compatriots,
We Armenians in Armenia and in the Armenian Diaspora represent a great
force as a national collectivity. We become convinced of that from
time to time, especially at the moments when there is an urgent need
to unite and combine our efforts to resist the challenges facing us.
At decisive moments we have the will and awareness to unite and
consolidate our potential to solve the issues of national concern. The
Armenians of Italy is one of the brilliant examples, and I am thankful
to you for your willingness.
All Armenians in Armenia, the Diaspora and Artsakh have combined their
efforts to hold with the Armenian State the events dedicated to the
Centennial of the Armenian Genocide at a high level, and most of you
are making your contributions. I express deep gratitude to our
compatriots who have traveled from different countries to be here and
to all those who assisted us in implementing the events dedicated to
the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide. Your support, as well as the
support of devoted and patriotic individuals like yourselves have
helped and encouraged us in our initiatives aimed at properly
commemorating this anniversary, which is very symbolic for the
Armenian people.
I hope you will also be in the Homeland during those days in April to
commemorate the martyrs with us.
I wish us all unity and endurance in order to fulfill our collective desires.
Thank you.
