On Wednesday, April 22, a show entitled Lousnak and the Cry of the
Crane will take place at La Sala Rossa (4848 St. Laurent Blvd.) to
commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Armenian Genocide.
The event is being organised by and will feature the titular Lousnak,
who is of Armenian descent. Although this year's event has special
significance, it has been going on since 1999.
"As the years went by I kept doing it and then, in 2005, I created
an event called Talk Genocide and it covered all the genocides in
the world," says the performer.
Lousnak was born in Beirut, where her grandparents had settled
following the genocide. When she was 11 years old she fled the Lebanese
war with her parents to live in London, England. A year later, they
moved to Paris where they lived for three years before settling
in Montreal.
At the show, artists from different spheres will participate, such
as Helmut Lipsky, Karen Young, Jessica Vigneault, Ziya Tabassian,
Paul Kunigos and more. Lousnak's long time collaborator Kristin
Molnar will sing and a perform numbers on the violin "She has been
accompanying me for so long," says Lousnak of Molnar.
"She's also my musical director on stage."
It is Lousnak's belief that this message can be better delivered
through artistic expression than through political discourse.
"We grew up hearing about it and wanting to make it right because it
is still a genocide that is not recognised by the Turkish government,"
she says. "A lot of people ask why we don't put this behind us because
it's in the past. We can't because it's a wound that's still open and
you can't heal until the perpetrator recognizes what they've done. I
have a daughter and I don't want this to be her burden too. Hopefully,
in my lifetime, this will be settled."
