PEACE DALE -- Lilit Mardiyan was just an eight-year-old girl when she
took her first guitar lesson. The Armenian-born musician would go on
to receive first prize at the International Youth Classical Guitar
Competition in Romania in 2002 and second prize at Great Britain's
Stafford Classical Guitar Recital Competition.
On Sunday, Mardiyan, now a student at the Yale School of Music,
where she is working toward a Master of Music studies degree, will
return to Peace Dale for an encore performance at Music at Lily Pads.
When she performed last September, Lily Pads spokesman David Floyd
said, she "left the audience awestruck at her talent and virtuosity."
Mardiyan has performed in festivals and concert series in St.
Petersburg, Sochi, Armenia, Greece and Germany and has collaborated
with the Orchestra of State Hermitage with conductors Karen Durgaryan
and Federico Mondelci.
A semifinalist in the 25th International Solo Guitar Competition
in Los Angeles, she studied at the Thornton School of Music and in
2009 received fist place in the Armenian Allied Arts Association
Competition and second place in American String Teachers' Association
California Competition.
Floyd said Mardiyan will perform without amplification, using the
natural acoustics of the space. Her program, he said, will consist
of works by Tarrega, Barrios-Mangere and other challenging pieces
from the classical guitar repertoire.
Music at Lily Pads has been presenting musical performances in
Peace Dale since 2009 in the sanctuary of the Unitarian Universalist
Congregation of South County.
The concert takes place on Sunday, April 19, starting at 3 p.m. at
Music at Lily Pads, 27 North Road in Peace Dale. Tickets are $12 at
the door. For more information, contact David Floyd at 401-497-0293
or [email protected], or visit musicatlilypads.org.
