ANNUAL MONTEBELLO COMMEMORATION OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE MOVED TO SATURDAY

MONTEBELLO - The annual commemoration of the Armenian genocide in
Turkey, which normally would be held Friday in Montebello, will be
moved to Saturday.
The event at the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument at Bicknell
Park in Montebello will be moved in order to avoid a conflict with
a scheduled six-mile march in Los Angeles from Little Armenia to
the Turkish consulate, said Arus Kazarian, secretary of the United
Armenian Council.
The march could have as many as 100,000 people taking part and will
begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Kazarian said.
The genocide is normally commemorated April 24 because that was the
day in 1915 that about 300 Armenian leaders in Turkey were rounded up
and deported or killed, and nearly 5,000 poor Armenians were killed
in and around Istanbul.
"This year is special because it's the 100th anniversary," Kazarian
said. "Everybody will be at the march," said Kazarian. "It wouldn't
be convenient for the public to be at both places."
As a result, the commemoration in Montebello will be held from noon
to 3 p.m. Saturday, said Razmik Hovanessian, a board member for the
United Armenian Council.
Hovanessian said he's still not sure who will be speaking at Saturday's
event.
The annual vigil - also held at the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument
in Montebello - is still scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, said Viken
Pakradouni, chairman of the San Gabriel Valley chapter of the Armenian
National Committee.
"It pays respects to the people who passed away in the genocide
and it's reaffirming our commitment to make sure that justice will
ultimately be received for these people," said Pakradouni about
the vigil.
The keynote address in English will be delivered by Armenian-American
attorney Mark Geragos, who was instrumental in bringing federal class
action suits against to insurance companies for insurance policies
issued to Armenians around the time of the Armenian Genocide and
unpaid claims stemming from those policies.
The Armenian keynote address will be delivered by Hayg Oshagan, a
professor of Communications at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich.
