MOTHERLAND'S EMBRACE: FANS GREET SOAD VISITING ARMENIA FOR LANDMARK CONCERT

The reception of the world-renowned rock band, System of a Down (SOAD),
and its frontman Serj Tankian by their Armenian fans on Wednesday in
no way yielded to the embrace that Armenians gave to the U.S. celebrity
Kardashian sisters who visited Armenia earlier this month.
Scores of fans waited in front of the Armenia Marriott Hotel in
Yerevan's central Republic Square during the evening to greet the
ethnic Armenian members of the group and have a chance for a selfie and
an autograph from the artists visiting Armenia for an unprecedented
free open-air show due tonight - on the eve of the Armenian Genocide
Centennial.
Many fans have arrived in Yerevan from abroad specifically to attend
the SOAD concert held as part of the reunited group's Wake Up the
Souls tour.
SOAD vocalist Serj Tankian and guitarist Shavo Odajyan were given
a warm reception as they appeared in front of the hotel, with
fans rewarded for the long wait in the form of "photo sessions"
and autographs.
Still before the arrival of the stars a number of young people
were playing the guitar and singing their songs. Tankian's putting
his signature on the guitar belonging to a young woman was enough
to reduce her to tears... of joy. "Mum, Tankian has just put his
autograph on my guitar." This was the only thing she could say.
Another teenager tried to approach and hug her idol Tankian so hard
that security had to step in.
Asya, 17, told ArmeniaNow that she was not "a crazy fan", simply she
loves Tankian so much that she wanted to hug him. "The Police treated
me so rudely, while I just wanted to hug him," she complained. "They
explain that all the measures are taken for security purposes, but
I don't think there would be anyone in here to hurt Tankian, all of
us love and regard him truthfully."
Asya will be among tens of thousands of fans attending tonight's
concert. Entrance to the concert is free, but Armenian authorities say
attendance will be limited to only 50,000 for security reasons. So,
many fans plan to get to the square early on not to miss the concert
and secure a place nearer the stage.
"I can't wait," the teenage fan told ArmeniaNow last night. "I'll be
here from the late night together with a number of fans like me. I
hope it will justify my expectations and even more," she said.
After meeting the fans, the group members started their first rehearsal
on a luxurious outdoor stage constructed especially for the concert.
