Diplomatic efforts are a must, but they will fail because everything is
decided on the border, Deputy Director of the Institute of Literature
and member of the Yerkrapah union Vardan Devrikyan told Tert.am as
he commented on the provocations by Azerbaijan, which claimed five
Armenian lives.
"Our priority must be re-enforcement of the frontline. Of course,
diplomatic means have their advantages, but we should not hope for
them," he said.
He points out two reasons for increased tension.
"Azerbaijanis trying to show that Armenia's accession to the Eurasian
Economic Union (EEU) does not at all mean serious security guarantees.
Therefore, strong defense must be our response."
According to Mr Devrikyan, Azerbaijan will go in escalating border
tension as the centennial of the Armenian Genocide approaches.
"Thus, Azerbaijan, as Turkey's small brother, opens a second front. So
our frontier guards are carrying out a number of most important tasks
- both ones related to our foreign policy and ones related to the
centennial of the Armenian Genocides, as well as a number of others."
