Yesterday the people of Gyumri continued their demonstration claiming
rightly that the slaughter of the Gyumri family must be investigated
and prosecuted by the Armenian law enforcement agencies.
Yesterday thousands of people gathered in front of Shirak Prosecutor's
Office where the prosecutor general had arrived. Then they walked in a
march to the Russian consulate which was blocked by the police cordon.
Clashes followed, over ten people were injured, including two
policemen.
Gyumri is stormed. People put forth an elementary claim that stems
from the Armenian legislation and national dignity and there is no
answer. This very circumstance is causing tension.
What is being done about this case of murder? From the very first
day the case has been covered with a dark and mysterious veil. The
actions and information on finding, arresting and keeping the suspect
in the Russian base are causing doubts. The impression is that the
Russian side is trying to cover up certain details of the crime. The
fact that the criminal acted alone also causes doubts.
Hence, rumors spread yesterday that the suspect has been taken to
Moscow. Afterwards MP Martun Grigoryan went to the Russian military
base and assured that he saw him there.
However, the most irritating thing is the behavior of the Armenia side
which is doing its hardest to justify the behavior of the Russian side
instead of dealing with its duties defined by law and constitution.
The Armenian law enforcement agencies cannot give articulate answers
to the righteous claims of the people of Gyumri.
The Russian side never apologized to the Armenian people for the cruel
murder committed by the soldier of its military base who shot and
stabbed an entire family. The version circulated by the investigative
body that the murderer wanted to drink water and they did not give
him water so he killed them, as well as other information that came
later sound ridiculous.
All these things together caused the "blast". The people of Gyumri
stood up for the dignity, security and law in their country. The
atrocity has touched people's most sensitive feelings. How long can
one tolerate such humiliation?
Yesterday they were able to send people home, and the clash with the
police helped them. The bishop of Shirak also asked his parish to
go home, reproaching those who entered into clashes with the police,
which distorted the concept of this powerful action of law.
However, pain and insult have not passed, they will not pass, and
failure to meet the righteous claims of the people of Gyumri may
lead to consequences compared with which yesterday's incidents will
be nothing.
What do the people of Gyumri want? They want state, human dignity,
rule of law, justice. Is the Armenian state beside its people or
protectors of the murderer?
