GERMANY SEEKS MEDIATING ROLE IN THE KARABAKH CONFLICT SETTLEMENT: MERKEL

Germany stands for the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh
conflict and seeks to have an immediate contribution to the process,
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has declared, Interfax reports.

"Germany seeks to take a mediating role in the resolution of the
conflict. We consider that the Council of Europe and the European
Union could come forth with an initiative in that direction, to make a
certain contribution to the settlement of the conflict. Azerbaijan is
holding consultations with the European Commission in this respect,"
Merkel said at a joint press conference with visiting Azerbaijani
    President Ilham Aliyev.

The Chancellor underlined that "Germany is a member of the OSCE Minsk
Group and supports the negotiations between the leaders of Armenia
and Azerbaijan held under the auspices of the co-chairing countries -
France, Russia and the United States."

She said there is no alternative to the peaceful resolution of this
conflict. "The frequent violations of the ceasefire regime are,
naturally, a negative factor. Russia plays a certain role here. I
just want to mention this," Merkel declared.
