Yerevan (dpa) - At least two Armenian soldiers were killed in a
skirmish along the border with Azerbaijan, Armenian authorities
said Friday.
Defence Ministry spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan said in the capital
Yerevan that the incident happened when Azeri forces attacked Armenian
positions in the Berd area of Armenia's northeastern Tavush province.
The spokesman claimed that the Azerbaijani forces also suffered
casualties.
Azerbaijan denied this. The Defence Ministry in Baku said that its
forces suffered no injuries when they thwarted an Armenian attempt
to cross the region's ceasefire line.
Armenia and Azerbaijan have been locked in a bitter dispute over the
disputed Nagorny Karabakh region, which broke off from Azerbaijan
after a war in the early 1990s.
In November, Azerbaijan decorated a soldier who it said had shot down
an Armenian military helicopter, killing at least three people.
US diplomat James Warlick, who co-chairs the Minsk Group, which
mediates in the conflict, appealed to the leaders of both countries
to stop the violence and commit to negotiations.
