Turkey spares no effort to end 2015 with minimum losses - Armen Marukyan

Turkey has never before marked the the anniversary of the Battle of
Gallipoli with such enthusiasm as it is seeking to do this year.
Turkey is obviously trying to reduce its losses to a minimum this
year, Associate Professor of History Armen Marukyan told Tert.am.
The purpose of an academic conference on the date of the Armenian
Genocide centennial is to distract the international community's
attention from the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
"I think the Armenian president's letter placed the right emphasis. I
fully share the opinion that after not responding to our president's
invitation to pay tribute to the memory of Armenian Genocide victims
in Tsitsernakaberd on April 24, Recep Erdogan had no moral right to
send such an invitation. But this is not a new style on his part," Mr
Marukyan said.
Armenians should expect Turkey to spring more similar surprises during
this year.
"My personal wish and opinion is that we should be more active and be
the first to take steps for the truth in the propaganda war unfolding
before us. Our president made the first step by inviting Erdogan to
the April 24 event," Mr Marukyan said.
It was the Armenian leader's response to his Turkish counterpart's "response."
"I think we should be the first making steps rather than responding.
If we correctly calculate our steps and predict Turkey's possible
reaction we can better present our position to the international
community."
Mr Marukyan believes that football diplomacy is irrelevant now and
points out the need for adequate activities because historical facts
confirm the Armenian side being right, and Turkey spares no effort to
end this year with minimum losses.
"We must not allow it," Mr Marukyan said.
Even the message of condolences by Turkey's leadership last year
showed Turkey actually continues its policy.
"These are merely new attempts to distort the reality and facts of the
Armenian Genocide. I think that the leaders that Erdogan invited to
the academic conference must realize the hidden motives, especially
since Turkish forces gained victory in the Battle of Gallipoli and the
allies failed. I do not think that attending such an academic
conference would bring honor to any leader, who would be defeated in
that battle."
Even if countries have not yet officially recognized or condemned the
Armenian Genocide, they are well aware that. However, for some
reasons, considering their relations with and interests in Turkey,
they have not made this step.
