Yerevan/Mediamax/. Former Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia,
Leader of opposition "Democratic Movement" Nino Burjanadze urged
Georgian authorities to back the normalization of Armenian-Azerbaijani
relations.
"The Georgian political elite closely watches the escalation of
tension in the conflict area. It is highly important for us that the
military operations do not resume. Only peace process can settle the
situation", said Nino Burjanadze in an interview withMediamax.
"Despite discords, Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders manage to meet and
move on the negotiation process", she said. "I hope they will succeed
in it now too".
Answering Mediamax's question on Georgia's possible role as a
mediator, Nino Burjanadze said that "even the slightest opportunity to
support the reconciliation should be used to maintain peace in the
entire region".
"However, I do not know if Georgian authorities have such an intention
or not", she said.
Nino Burjanadze also offered condolences to Armenian people over the
Gyumri tragedy.
"It's horrible. I hope there will be fair trial and those guilty will
be punished to the fullest extent of the law", she said.
