KNIGHTS OF VARTAN ANI LODGE TO PRODUCE THREE-PART ACADEMIC SERIES TO MARK
THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
WASHINGTON, DC - As Armenians around the world begin to commemorate the
centennial anniversary of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, the Knights of Vartan
are actively participating in several broad-based coalitions of Armenian
organizations involved in the planning of local, regional, and national
events. As part of these activities, and in an effort to remember and honor
the lives of 1.5 million Armenians who died at the hands of the Ottoman
Turkish government during World War I, the Knights of Vartan-Ani Lodge in
Washington, DC is planning a three-part academic series of lectures
touching upon different aspects of the Armenian Genocide. Events will take
place at various universities in the Washington, DC metropolitan area in
January, February, and March 2015.
`The Armenian Genocide should be commemorated throughout the calendar year
and not just in the month of April,' stated Ani Lodge Commander Jake
Bournazian. `The Turkish government systematically killed Armenians every
month during 1915-1923. This trilogy of genocide lectures is designed to
show a new model for commemorating the Armenian Genocide in the 21st
century and utilizes the vast knowledge on genocide studies that scholars
have developed over the past 100 years,' Bournazian said.
The first event in the three-part lecture series is entitled `Oil,
Politics, and the Genocide in Armenia: The First World War Retrospect,'
featuring Professor Christopher Simpson, a professor of Journalism from the
School of Communications at American University. It will be held at
American University School of Communication, McKinley Building, Room 100 on
Thursday, January 29, 2015, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM.
Professor Simpson is internationally recognized for his expertise in
propaganda, democracy, and media theory and practice. He has authored five
books and won national awards for investigative reporting, historical
writing, and literature. This first lecture will discuss the lucrative oil
concessions that U.S. oil companies received from the Ottoman Turks and the
subsequent aggressive lobbying of Congress by oil companies for the U.S.
government's silence on the Armenian Genocide.
Space is limited and RSVP is required. For media inquiries or to RSVP,
please contact Knights of Vartan Ani Lodge at [email protected].
Details regarding future events in February and March, 2015 will be
announced soon.
