Armenia not to accept Czech verdict for mafia boss Soghoyan
Prague March 5 (CTK)
Armenia will not accept the verdict given for Armenian mafia boss
Andranik Soghoyan who was sent to 22 years in prison for ordering a
murder in the Czech Republic, Czech Justice Ministry has said on its
web site.
Replying to the Czech request, the Armenian Justice Ministry said the
acceptance was unrealistic because the Armenian law did not include
the specific procedural rules that would enable this.
Soghoyan ordered and organised the murder of an Armenian businessman
in 2007, but the hired assassin killed a wrong man and stabbed another
one by mistake.
The lower level courts acquitted Soghoyan twice in the past, but the
case was repeatedly returned to them by the appeals court.
The final verdict was given to Soghoyan in October 2013, but at that
time he was abroad as the courts released him from custody.
Soghoyan's extradition to the Czech Republic is ruled out because
Armenia does not extradite its citizens abroad.
Last September, Soghoyan failed to start serving his sentence in the
Czech Republic.
At the end of October, he was taken into custody in Armenia. However,
in January, he was released from it, although the Czech Republic asked
for its prolongation.
This is why the Czech Republic sent a request to Armenia to take over
the sentence. If it did, Soghoyan might serve it in his homeland.
Soghoyan and his co-defendants are internationally wanted.
