Berdzor Incident: Karabakh police stop "hardliners" from Armenia
A number of high-ranking police officers in Nagorno-Karabakh have been
reprimanded and dismissed from work over a recent incident during
which opposition activists from Yerevan were beaten up and stopped
from entering the republic.
Dozens of members and supporters of Founding Parliament, a hard-line
opposition group seeking regime change in Armenia, were confronted
by police and angry plainclothes men on the Goris-Yerevan highway
near Berdzor on January 31.
The violent attack was condemned by many opposition and civic
groups in Armenia. Initially, the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic's police
defended the use of force, saying that it was aimed at preventing
"mass disturbances".
In a statement on Monday, the NKR Police Press Service presented a list
of police officers who have been reprimanded or strictly reprimanded
by the NKR Police Chief, Major-General Kamo Aghajanyan in connection
with "gross disciplinary violations".
Among those reprimanded is also the Deputy Chief of Police, Colonel
Gagik Ghahramanyan.
