TURKEY NEVER SAID IT WAS READY FOR ECONOMIC RELATIONS WITH ARMENIA - MINISTER
YEREVAN, March 18. / ARKA /. Turkey never said it was ready to
establish economic relations with Armenia, Armenian economy minister
Karen Chshmarityan said in response to a Turkish journalist's question
when speaking at an international media forum 'At the Foot of Mount
Ararat" in Yerevan. The Turkish journalist wanted to know whether
Turkish businesses could invest in Armenia despite the fact that
Armenia and Turkey have no diplomatic relations.
"Armenia did not receive signals from Turkey about its readiness for
bilateral economic cooperation," - said Chshmarityan. The minister
noted that Turkish goods are imported to Armenia, but one can not
found Armenian goods in Turkey.
"Therefore, we can ask the same question. Is Turkey ready to cooperate
with Armenia? Turkey does not recognize Armenia even as a member of
the WTO, and I think it is necessary to begin with this,' concluded
Chshmarityan.
The international media forum which will run through 20 March, has
brought to Yerevan more than 200 journalists from 34 countries,
including Turkey. The forum is organized by the Commonwealth of
Journalists media congress and the Center for Information and Public
Relations of the Armenian President.
According to the National Statistical Service of Armenia, the trade
turnover between Armenia and Turkey in 2014 was worth $233.8 million,
an increase of 10.2% from 2013. In January 2015 the trade turnover
between the countries amounted to $4.9 million, a decline of 56.3%
from the year before.
Earlier this year Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan recalled from
the Armenian parliament the protocols on the normalization of ties
and establishment of diplomatic relations with Turkey. In a statement
Sargsyan said he had asked parliament speaker to return the protocol
to him because "the Turkish government has no political will, distorts
the spirit and letter of the protocols and continues its policy of
setting preconditions."
Sargsyan also said that on the eve of commemoration of the 100th
anniversary of the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey during World
War I, "the policy of denial and rewriting history" is getting a
renewed impulse in Ankara.
The protocols to normalize ties between Turkey and Armenia were signed
in Zurich on Oct. 10, 2009 with the aim of establishing diplomatic
relations and opening the two countries' land border. -0-
