ZHAMANAK: ARMENIAN PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT: RUSSIA RESPONDS BY MEANS OF AZERBAIJAN
10:31 * 20.03.15
Escalation of tension on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on Thursday
morning resulted, according to official reports, in three deaths,
leaving four servicemen wounded, on the Armenian side.
According to the reports, the Azerbaijani commando unit was
neutralized. However, it can hardly relieve the suffering from the
loss of each Armenian soldier.
This tension is of special nature for the following reason: it followed
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan's statement on Russian arms sales
to Azerbaijan. He stressed the need for resolving the problem, which
could affect Armenian-Russian relations. Armenian soldiers are well
aware that it is Russian weapons that are used against them, the
president said.
Yes, it was an unprecedented statement indeed, which was followed by
another incident on the Line of Contact. It could, directly or not,
have been a response to the Armenian president's statement.
The problem is that the incident took place after Serzh Sargsyan
made his statement, which means that Baku certainly considered it in
resorting to such a provocation. In fact, the provocation by Baku
proves the correctness of the Armenian president's words. This is
also evidence that precludes Russia's response. On its part, Baku
delivers a serious blow on Russia.
On the other hand, it is clear that Azerbaijan cannot be interested
in it. So if it made such a step it must have agreed it with Russia
being sure Russia would not view it as a blow on the Kremlin's position
on Armenia.
