Armenia needs ministry to deal with export - Vazgen Safaryan

In an interview with Tert.am, Vazgen Safaryan, Chairman of the Union
of Native Commodity Producers spoke of producers' cooperation with the
Eurasian Economic Union (EEU).
He pointed out a downtrend in exports, but exporters are trying to
maintain their level of involvement in the market in order not to lose
the market.
"Neither the brandy nor wine exports have grown. In January we had
downtrend in exports," he said.
He pointed out a number of reasons for that. The first is the Russian
population's lower purchasing power.
"In export terms, the RUB-USD exchange rate is not to our producers'
advantage. If the Armenian national currency were weak against the
dollar, it would be to our benefit. Depreciation of the Armenian dram
boosts exports. However, the depreciation of the Russian ruble makes
the situation unfavorable," Mr Safaryan said.
He is sure of economic recovery in Russia.
"This situation cannot last for long, Russia will develop its
industry, because large investments are being made, and I think it was
a good lesson for Russia. They develop their industry and agriculture
and become less dependent on Europe," said the expert.
It would also promote exports from Armenia.
Mr Safaryan is concerned over the lack of a government body to deal
with the study of the Russian market.
"We need a Ministry of Foreign Trade and Industry, and the Ministry
should have representatives in all the countries where we are
exporting goods, particularly Russia, China," he said.
Last year Armenia's exports to China exceeded $ 170 million, which,
according to him, was a turning point.
