YEREVAN, 23 ARMENPRESS. Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Eduard
Sharmazanov doesn't find it appropriate to include the issue of the
genocide of the Yazidis in the draft of the statement condemning the
genocide of the Greeks and Assyrians in Ottoman Turkey.
This is what the main speaker during the discussion on the draft of the
declaration "On Condemning the Genocide of the Greeks and Assyrians
Perpetrated by Ottoman Turkey between 1915 and 1923" at the National
Assembly, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Eduard Sharmazanov
said in response to leader of the faction of the Prosperous Armenia
Party Naira Zohrabyan's question and emphasized that even though
the initial discussion was on the drafts of two declarations, one
of which referred to condemning the genocide of the Yazidis, the
adoption of the draft was postponed after discussions with members
of the committee and with representatives of the Yazidi community
due to insufficient evidence.
According to Sharmazanov, one would be illiterate to include the
genocide of the Yazidis in a declaration condemning the genocide of
the Greeks and Assyrians. "I believe the Yazidis deserve to have us
adopt a separate declaration condemning their genocide, if there are
facts. If they have facts, let them submit those facts, and we'll
discuss them. We have assured them that we're ready to create a task
force comprised of historians and representatives of all the factions
of the National Assembly to discuss the issue. We have to treat these
issues seriously. The National Assembly of Armenia doesn't have the
right to adopt documents that will cast doubts," Sharmazanov said. He
informed that he had had meetings with representatives of the Yazidi
community and had reached an agreement on holding an exhibition at
the National Assembly in April-May.
