Yerevan, 25 May: The Armenian and US sides have signed an agreement on
allocating over 1m dollars by the US Department of State to strengthen
the physical protection of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).

The NPP deputy director-general, Musheg Shahinyan, said in an interview
with Mediamax today that appropriate work is already being carried out
and is expected to be finished by March 2005. According to Shahinyan,
the financial assistance was rendered within the framework of measures
to upgrade the level of the physical security of nuclear power plants
in the former Soviet Union realized by the US Department of Energy.

The funds allocated by the US side are channelled into the
implementation of part of the project of modernization of the NPP's
    physical security designed for 2004-2005.

The modernization of the NPP's physical security is aimed to prevent
possible terrorist acts and protect the plant against external
interventions. The government of Armenia endorsed a blueprint for
the strengthening of the physical protection and safeguarding of the
Armenian nuclear power station and nuclear materials on 11 September
    2003.
