RUSSIAN MINISTER SAYS THIRD PARTIES MUST NOT IMPOSE KARABAKH SETTLEMENT

[Presenter] Peacekeeping forces may be deployed in Nagornyy Karabakh
in the foreseeable future. For the last 12 years the ceasefire in this
region has remained very fragile. Today in Baku Russian Deputy Prime
Minister and Defence Minister Sergey Ivanov spoke about the future
of the territory which causes tension between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
[Ivanov] Russia has spoken about the problems of Nagornyy Karabakh on
several occasions, advocating a peaceful, political solution to these
problems. In my view, any plan for a settlement enforced from outside
is not only counterproductive, but also very dangerous. The final
formula for the settlement must primarily be based on agreement between
the two sides, Armenia and Azerbaijan. And if such an agreement is
reached, then the mediating countries will, naturally, propose any
measures needed to ensure this agreement is implemented.
