ARMENIANS RAID ON AKHALKALAK BRANCH OF TBILISI STATE UNIVERSITY AND LOCAL GEORGIAN CHURCH

Recent murder of Gevorg Gevorgyan in the fight between Georgians and
Armenians in Kvemo-Kartli caused dissatisfaction of Armenians.
APA bureau in Georgia reports that Armenians staged a protest rally
in Akhalkalak for the incident. Armenians say that the happening
in Tsalka town is politically motivated. Javakhk Alliance members
attacked Tbilisi State University and broke the windows and doors.
Claiming Georgians' studying in Akhalkalak is illegal, they demanded
that the Armenian language should be a state language and judges who
were dismissed due to being ethnic Armenians should be reinstated. A
group of Armenians raided on the Georgian Church in Akhalkalak and
searched the church on pretext of arms hidden there.
Samtskhe-Javakheti governor Georgi Khachidze said the happenings in
Akhalkalak were headed by criminal elements. Criminal proceedings
have already been initiated on the incident but nobody has been held
accountable yet.
