US District Judge Mark L. Wolf heard arguments yesterday in the
long-running dispute over whether a state curriculum guide should
include materials arguing that the deaths and dislocations of at
least 1 million Armenians in the World War I era do not constitute
genocide. The materials have been removed from the guide. A group
of teachers, students, Turkish advocates, and First Amendment rights
advocates contend the materials were removed under political pressure
and have sued for their reinstatement on free speech grounds. Lawyers
for both sides spent three hours arguing over whether the case should
continue.
