AUTHORS OF STATEMENT READ AT OPPOSITION RALLY RELIEVED OF THIER POSTS
AND DEPRIVED OF DIPLOMATIC RANKS
YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 24, NOYAN TAPAN. By the February 23 decree of the
Armenian president Robert Kocharian, 3 high-ranking diplomats were
relieved of their posts and deprived of their diplomatic ranks.
According to a press release submitted to NT by the RA president's
press service, Armen Bayburdian was relieved of his post as deputy
foreign minister of the Republic of Armenia and deprived of the
diplomatic rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary, Levon
Khachatrian was relieved of his post as Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary of the RA in Kazakhstan, plurastically - in Kyrzhystan
and deprived of the diplomatic rabk of abassador extraordinary and
plenipotentiary, Ruben Shugarian was relieved of his post as Ambassador
Extraoridinary and Plenipotentiary in Italy, pluralistically - in
Portugal and Spain and was deprived of the diplomatic rank of
ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary.
To recap, the above mentioned diplomats, as well the Armenian envoy in
Ukraine, advisor Razmik Khumarian made a statement on February 23
(which was read at a rally of the forces in support of Levon
Ter-Petrosian), which in particular reads: "remaining devoted to the
rank of an Armenian ambassador, being guided by a sense of
responsibility to the Republic of Armenia and the Armenian people,
being concerned over the current situation in Armenia, deeply
respecting the suffrage of Armenian citizens and being convinced that
the only president elected through free and fair elections may deal
with the challenges facing our country in the international field in
the best way and substantially raise our compatriots who have risen to
struggle for establishment of real democracy in Armenia. Underlining
the necessity of maintaining the stability and social acoord in the
country, we appeal to our compatriots, especially the respresentatives
of all the structures responsible for ensuring the public order and
peace in the country not to yield to the temptation to solve problems
by force".
To recap, by a presidential decree, the February 22 petition of the RA
prosecutor general Aghvan Hovsepian to relieve his deputy Gagik
Jhangirian of his post and expel him from the prosecutor's system was
granted, as by making a speech at a rally of the first Armenian
president's supporters in Freedom Square and stating his support for L.
Ter-Petrosian, G. Jhangirian "grossly violated the requirement of the
law", according to which, "a prosecutor may not be a member of any
party or be involved in politics in any other way; under any
circumstances a prosecutor must display political restraint and
neutrality".
