YEREVAN, JANUARY 16, NOYAN TAPAN. During the January 16 working
meeting of the Armenian president Robert Kocharian and the minister
of energy Armen Movsisian, the latter presented the situation in the
country's energy system due to the cold weather. According to him,
electricity consumption has increased to 23.5 million kwh daily in
Armenia, which has created considerable tension in servicing and
operation of the systems and regimes.
Despite it, there have been no serious accidents, A. Movsisian said.
The interlocutors spoke about the program on installation of a combined
steam-and-gas turbine at the Yerevan Thermal Power Plant. The program
started in early 2008 and will end in two years. The minister said
that the new turbine will have a capacity of 245 megawatts and reduce
the production cost of electricity.
NT was informed by the RA president's press service that issues
related to the preparatory stage of construction of a hydropower plant
on the Arax River, construction of Iran-Armenia and Armenia-Georgia
high-voltage lines, and feasibility studies on operation of the nuclear
power plant and construction of a new nuclear power unit were also
discussed at the meeting.
