President Serzh Sargsyan met with member of the Federal Council of
the Swiss Confederation, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Micheline
Calmy-Rey and the delegation led by her, the RA leader's press office
reported.
The President of Armenia stated with satisfaction that relations
between the two states develop dynamically and a comprehensive and
many-sided bilateral agenda has already been set. A sound structure
for the bilateral dialogue is in place and has been significantly
strengthened by the numerous mutual visits. According to Serzh
Sargsyan, Switzerland has been traditionally active in providing
technical and financial assistance for Armenia's development and
implementation of reforms. He said that the legal field, which has
also been established, is a solid base for the utilization of the
existing potential. Mrs. Micheline Calmy-Rey underlined Switzerland's
active participation in the programs for the development of Armenia's
rural areas. Noting, that the Swiss Development Agency bureau has
already been established in Yerevan, she stated that a decision has
been adopted to open in Armenia a diplomatic representation as well.
The two sides concurred that Armenia and Switzerland, both being
small countries, should cooperate more intensely. The Minister of
Foreign Affairs of Switzerland stressed in particular the importance
of cooperation in the framework of the European Council.
The President of Armenia and Mrs. Micheline Calmy-Rey spoke also
about the economic cooperation. They observed that although the trade
relations are developing rapidly, the basic indices, which initially
were very low, have not so far reached the desirable level.
Viewing economic development and eradication of poverty as priorities,
President Sargsyan said that regarding these issues Armenia anticipates
assistance of friendly and partner states.
The President of Armenia spoke also about the political and economic
reforms currently underway in the country, as well as about the
regional issues, Armenian-Turkish relations, and the NK peace process.
