  • Number Of Armenian Citizens Applying For Asylum In France Increases

NUMBER OF ARMENIAN CITIZENS APPLYING FOR ASYLUM IN FRANCE INCREASES IN PAST THREE YEARS

    March 28, 2008

YEREVAN, MARCH 28, NOYAN TAPAN. The number of applications filed
by Armenian citizens to countries, which traditionally receive the
largest number of applications for asylum - particularly, Belgium,
Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic, has declined in the past
three years. Instead, as NT correspondent was informed by the head
of the migration agency of the RA ministry of territorial governance
Gagik Yeganian, a growth of Armenian citizens' applications for asylum
    in France has been observed.

According to him, the agency implements work on preparation and signing
of readmission agreements for the return of Armenian citizens who
stay illegally in other countries. Such agreements have been signed
with Lithuania, Switzerland, Denmark and Germany.

In the words of G. Yeganian, in case of the absence of a readmission
agreement, deportation is carried out based on regulations of
administrative nature, and the admitting country, in the given
case - Armenia, has few opportunities to protect the interests of
its citizens. Whereas, in case of existence of such an agreement,
some provisions on protection of interests of Armenian citizens may
be included in the agreement, including provisions on exclusion of
collective deportation, on individual examining of citizens' cases.

It was mentioned that preparatory work is currently underway on
signing of readmission agreements with another ten countries,
including Poland, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia,
    Ukraine, and Benelux countries.
