    EUROPE AND ITS CONSCIENCE

Although it is common knowledge that the largest bulk of documents
available regarding the Armenian Genocide is kept in Turkish archives
but i believe that only a fraction of it will ever be made available
by the Turkish authorities to us, Armenians, or to any international
    organisation engaged in their research.

We must understand that many of these documents will have their
incriminating paragraphs, even whole pages, removed by the Turkish
authorities to reduce the accusation, diminish the crime and deceive
    the international community.

It is also a great pitty that in our efforts to gather all that
has been written about the Armenian Genocide, we have never - to my
knowledge - approached the Authorities in Vatican and asked permission
to access their information : the Vatican possesses in its vaults
a very large - the second largest next to Turkey - documentation on
the issue. Documentation gathered by the fact that almost every day,
sometimes every hour, news of the genocidal acampaign , massacres,
hangings , meetings and quotations by the Ottoman government of 1915 -
1918 referring to the Armenian Genocide, have been sent to Vatican by
eye-witnesses , by members of the Catholic Clergy and of the Vatican`s
Corps Diplomatic . These reports have been received and filed and
are kept alongside many other rare, valuable and important documents.

Maybe the Holy See of Eshmiadzine, or the Armenian Government, through
its Ambassador to Vatican, could make that application and ask for
our researchers to be given the opportunity and help which will
enable them to register and classify the reports in their entirety -
away from any Turkish interference - and contribute to their research
    with new and unreffutable documents.

In November 1997, His Holiness Garegin I , addressing the
British-Armenian All-Party Parliamentary Group at the House of Lords
( British Parliament) spoke of his book "The conscience of Europe"
and asked : "Europe , where was thou conscience when the Armenian
Genocide was committed " . Attending the meeting was John Coleman,
editor of "The New European ", who used and printed the quotation as
the title of its editorial chapter .

    "Where was thou conscience? "

This question can be best answered by the Religious Authorities in
Vatican , together with the European Union member countries by making
available to the researchers all the documents , files , reports and
agreements which are labelled confidential , have been kept unopened
and have not been accessed for the past 94 years .
