WHAT IF THE ERGENEKON PROBE HAD NOT BEEN LAUNCHED?

Now that a list of 12 people who were to have been assassinated has
been found and murders may have been prevented at the last moment,
we can imagine a nightmare scenario based on the latest information.

Suppose that there had been no Ergenekon investigation and people were
not being prosecuted in the case. And things go wild. An Armenian
cleric, one of the 12 people who were picked for assassination,
is killed. What would happen then? Wouldn't utter chaos arise in
the country? Wouldn't the world raise voices against the killing
of a Turkish-Armenian citizen in Sivas amid the ongoing reactions
to the murder of Hrant Dink? As for us, wouldn't we be going through
inexplicable sorrows for this person who was killed just because he was
Armenian? Some people are talking without thinking and they are talking
nonsense in order to belittle the Ergenekon investigation. All in vain!

It is said that this list of 12 people slated for assassination also
includes several intellectuals who supported the campaign to apologize
to Armenians. Suppose that one of them was killed. What would we tell
the world? Or, more importantly, how would we ease our consciences? It
is obvious that Gladio reasons as follows: "Because psychological and
political conditions are ripe, some people must be killed now." Since
the apology campaign has been criticized massively, it would be easy
to put the blame on "rising nationalistic sentiments." Even if you
say, "What is the connection between opposing this campaign and this
murder?" it would convince no one. Eventually, this connection would be
established and those who have criticized the campaign, including the
prime minister, would be harshly accused. A new political atmosphere
would be created. The murder would be committed by Ergenekon, but
its price would be paid by others.

According to the news reports, a person known for his Alevi identity,
too, was on the death list. Suppose that this citizen was killed in
an abhorrent attack. How would this be perceived by the general
public? Obviously, this would turn a new page in Alevi-Sunni
tensions. While the triggermen and the masterminds of the attack
are having fun, the rage of the people who are manipulated by
psychological warfare would focus on this conflict, which would
increase social polarization and political chaos. Those who, today,
label Ergenekon as a trivial or unimportant matter would pretend to
lament over Alevis, but would in fact be showing their respect to
their shadowy masters. They would never think that they had been used.

It is claimed that this list also featured a Jewish businessman. Isn't
it the most suitable time for such a murder? While everyone is building
up rage against the Israeli government and the prime minister is
ranting at Israeli policies, the murder of a Jew would not only send
shudders around the world, but would also have a profound impact
on domestic politics. Those who today dilute Ergenekon would say:
"We told you so! If you wage an anti-Israel campaign, this will be
the result." I assure you that the headlines in the papers would make
    many accusations.

There may be those who find these nightmarish scenarios to be
exaggerated. I must note that the Council of State attack is an
important incident within the Ergenekon investigation. Please
remember those days. A young lawyer entered the Council of State
building and opened fire on judges, killing one of them. There were
many who made judgments before fully understanding it. Even then the
president had cast the lawyer's identity to the side and accused
politicians of the attack. In the usual manner, Deniz Baykal cast
his experience aside and did not hesitate to say, "Politics has been
stained with blood." Even some of our fellow journalists labeled it as
"Turkey's Sept. 11" and hurled harsh accusations at devout people and
conservatives. As the identity and contacts of the assailant, Alparslan
Arslan, were uncovered, the Gladio-styled so-called nationalistic
and patriotic groups, including retired Capt. Muzaffer Tekin and
retired Lt. Gen. Veli Küçük, were found to have masterminded the
attack. A similar mood had settled in the case of the murder of Necip
HablemitoÄ~_lu, but that murder, too, found its place in the Ergenekon
file. Who knows what shadowy and mysterious murders have been committed
by whom and what black propaganda has been planned based on them?

Everyone must listen to their hearts and should not allow the Ergenekon
trial to be sabotaged. Of course, criticisms can be voiced against
mistakes and errors. But the prosecutors who saved the country from
the edge of the abyss should be encouraged to take this investigation
to the end. Otherwise, this country will never save itself from
    mysterious and covert murderers.
