Arizona Western College's Arpine Amirkhanyan was named the Arizona
Community College Athletic Conference's Division I Player of the Week
for her play in the Lady Matadors' games against Eastern Arizona and
Yavapai last week.
Amirkhanyan, known best for her tough post presence on the
defensive end, showed off her offensive abilities over the last two
games. Averaging less than seven points and seven rebounds per game
this season, Amirkhanyan broke out to score a career-high 25 points and
14 rebounds on Wednesday against Eastern Arizona as the Matadors were
forced to make the trip to Thatcher without top-two scorers Katrina
Johnson and Yohanna Morton. Nine of those points against the Gila
Monsters came from the three 3-pointers she hit in the first half as
the Matadors went on to win 64-47.
When Morton and Johnson rejoined the team for Saturday's contest to
begin the second half of conference play against Division I Yavapai,
Amirkhanyan continued her stellar play to help AWC take a two-game
lead in the race for second place on the Roughriders with a 92-75
win. The Van Nuys, Calif. product finished the game with her second
straight double-double of 22 points and 12 rebounds, including an
8-for-10 night at the free throw line.
Amirkanyan is the third Lady Matador to earn the Player of the Week
honor this season, Morton and Johnson having previously received the
award. She will go for a third straight double-double tonight as AWC
travels to Tucson to play Pima Community College.
