ARMENIAN PRIME MINISTER OBJECTS TO WAGE INDEXATION

    ARKA
    March 18, 2010

YEREVAN, March 18, /ARKA/. During a Wednesday parliament Q&A session
Armenian prime minister Tigran Sarkisian objected to a proposal to
start indexation of wages to compensate for inflation, arguing that
wages are adjusted when inflation rate goes beyond 10 percent.

The prime minister then argued that wage indexation 'contains
elements of inflation stimulation.' In his opinion, the main task of
the government is work to curb inflation and prevent a sharp rise
of prices. According to official figures, the median wage in 2010
    January was 101, 704 drams ($269, ~@189 or 8,027 Russian rubles ),
rising by 8.8% from 2009 January. He said the government and World
Bank Yerevan Office are specifying currently the number of families
that must be eligible to poverty benefits.
