PARIS, MARCH 14, ARMENPRESS: The Armenian community of France
organized March 12 a protest rally in front of the French Senate,
demanding to approve the bill on criminal punishment for the denial
of the Armenian Genocide.
Armenpress reports from France that over 3000 Armenians partook in the
rally, organized by the Council of Armenian Organizations of France.
RA Ambassador to Switzerland Charles Aznavour, Patrick Devedjian,
president of Hauts-de-Seine council general, Andre Santini, French
secretary of state for the civil service, and a number of Armenian
and French public-political figures were present at the rally. Patrick
Devedjian mentioned that the Armenian communities of France and other
states suffered in the result of Turkey's denial policy.
"We call on France, the true and respectful citizens of which we are,
to protect us in our way of identity conservation and in the issue
of Genocide," Patrick Devedjian said. Andre Santini mentioned that
the bill has been adopted by the French National Assembly, and the
Senate, in turn, should vote for the bill. He called on Armenians
to exert pressure on senators and stressed the fact that elections
are expected in the near future. Charles Aznavour touched upon the
Armenians' participation in World War II and mentioned that no any
Turk would ever wear French uniform.
"Turkey has always preferred Germany rather than France. It is their
right, and our right is not to welcome them in France and demand that
they stop denying the Armenian Genocide," Charles Aznavour said.
During the rally Serge Lagauche, French senator, France-Armenia
friendship group member, read the letter of the French Socialist Party
chairman. The letter mentioned that the Senate will discuss the bill
June, 2011. Hrach Varjapetyan, head of the ARF Hay Dat (Armenian Cause)
office in Paris, told Armenpress that the rally is an achievement,
but not a final victory.
"We achieved what we were demanding, and in case there are no new
developments after June, the Armenians will be ready to go ahead until
the bill is finally approved," Hrach Varjapetyan said. Rallies with
the same claim were held in Marseilles and Valensia.
