Yanukovych: Ukraine's position on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict based on
respect for Azerbaijan's territorial integrity
Ukraine's position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement remains
unchanged, and is based on respect for Azerbaijan's sovereignty and
territorial integrity, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.
"We think that ensuring peace, security and stability in the OSCE area
is a key factor in promoting the economic development of countries in
general and improving the welfare of their citizens. In turn, I would
like to assure that Ukraine's position on the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict settlement remains unchanged, and is based on respect for the
sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within its
internationally recognized borders," he said in an interview with
Azerbaijan's Trend news agency published on Thursday.
Yanukovych said that the positions of Ukraine and Azerbaijan on many
issues of regional policy were based on similar approaches.
He said that they concerned the need to resolve this and other
"frozen" conflicts exclusively through peace talks, on the basis of
the principles and norms of international law.
"Ukraine will assume the OSCE's chairmanship in 2013. I want to
underline that in this role we will render the necessary assistance to
the settlement of 'frozen' conflicts. This also concerns the OSCE
Minsk Group's activities. We hope that the political will of the sides
in the conflict will give the possibility to reach agreement on
certain principles, on the basis of which a path will be found to
resolve the conflict," Yanukovych said.
The Ukrainian president is on an official visit to Azerbaijan on April 28.
