"Unfortunately, we are a society without a memory and we need to
claim our past if we want to modernize," said AyÅ~_enil Å~^amlıoglu,
Istanbul Municipal Theater's general art director who has staged
Hagop Baronyan's "Eastern Dentist".
In the interview given to Turkish "Hurriyet Daily News" AyÅ~_enil
Å~^amlıoglu said that the Armenians are the foundation of Turkish
theater and it is impossible to eradicate Armenian artists from
Turkish theater.
"We need to claim our past if we want to modernize. Unfortunately, we
are a society without a memory; we ignored people who had been living
on this soil for thousands of years due to ideological reasons. It is
impossible for us to eradicate Armenian artists from Turkish theater,"
