PanARMENIAN.Net - Glendale's Transportation Center is getting a new,
but familiar, name.
The building at 400 Cerritos Avenue will be dubbed the Larry Zarian
Transportation Center in honor of the former mayor who died of cancer
earlier this month.
The City Council unanimously approved the name change.
"He's just a wonderful man and I think it's wonderful," resident
Lenore Solis said at the meeting. "This is the least we can do."
Zarian played a large part in bringing the Beeline bus system
to Glendale and was involved in several transportation agencies,
including the National Highway Safety Commission and the Los Angeles
County Metropolitan Transportation Authority board of directors.
Zarian was Glendale's first Armenian-American mayor, serving on the
City Council from 1983 to 1999. He died at 73.
A new sign will be placed at the center in coming months. The city
plans to spend $18,500 from an undesignated parking fund to pay for the
tribute, which includes several signs, Glendale News-Press reported.
