    INDEPENDENCE DAY OF ARMENIA WEDNESDAY

    Manila Bulletin
    Sept 20 2011
    The Philippines

MANILA, Philippines - Wednesday is the Independence Day of Armenia
which commemorates its freedom from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Landlocked in South Caucasus and located between the Black and
Caspian Seas, Armenia borders Turkey to the west, Georgia to the
north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran and the Nakhchivan exclave of
Azerbaijan to the south. Yerevan is the country's capital and largest
city. Population is around 3.2 million people.

Armenia is a member of numerous international organizations, including
the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the Asian Development Bank,
the Commonwealth of Independent States, the World Trade Organization
and the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation.

The economy of Armenia is heavily dependent on remittances by Armenians
working abroad. Its oil and gas supplies come from Iran and Georgia,
the two important countries with which Armenia maintains cordial
    relations.

We congratulate the people and government of Armenia led by Their
Excellencies, President Serzh Azati Sargsyan, Prime Minister Tigran
Sargsyan and National Assembly Speaker Hovik A. Abrahamyan, and
its Consulate in the Philippines led by Consul Jose Periquet Jr.,
on the occasion of its Independence Day. We wish them all the best
and success in all their endeavors. MABUHAY!
