Maragha - 20th anniversary: Against Legal Abuse NGO organized an event
today dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the genocide perpetrated
by Azerbaijanis against the Armenian population of Maragha village.

The event was attended by representatives of state bodies of Armenia
and Nagorno Karabakh, diplomatic and international organizations,
NGOs, as well as residents of Maragha, witnesses of the tragedy,
    relatives of the victims.

"It was like Golgotha...", this is how Baroness Caroline Cox
described the Maragha tragedy. On April 10, 1992 the subunits of
the Azerbaijani regular army invaded the village of Maragha. As a
result of the aggression hundreds killed. Scores of people were taken
hostages and later were exchanged, but the fate of many of them still
    remains unknown

The monstrous crimes in Maragha followed the Armenian pogroms and
deportations in the Northern Artsakh, as well as Baku, Sumgait,
Kirovabad and other settlements of Azerbaijan and were aimed at
frightening the people and disabling them to live in their homeland.

With the depth of human tragedy, the level of cruelty, the number of
people exposed to violence and captured, the events in the village
of Maragha occupy a special place among the bloody crimes committed
by Azerbaijan in Getashen, Martounashen, Buzlukh, Erkej and the other
Armenian villages in the northern part of the NKR in 1991-1992.

"All those, who didn't manage to flee, were slaughtered, burnt
or taken hostage," witnesses say. The Azerbaijanis robbed all the
houses and burnt them. The residents of Maragha were slaughtered in
    the cruelest way.

Only 118 out of the 5 000 residents stayed in the village and became
the victims of the cruel massacre. According to the data presented by
MP Larisa Alaverdyan, Executive Director of the Against Legal Abuse
NGO, 59 of the 118 villagers were taken hostage, the rest were killed.
