THE BERD TOWN LIBRARY STATE-OF-THE-ART MOBILE COMPUTER LAB IS OPEN!

    13-04-2012

On April 6 2012, within the framework of the EIFL-funded project
"Harnessing ICT for Improved Farming Practices" being carried out by
the Berd Town Library (Tavush region of Armenia) in close cooperation
with Green Lane NGO (Yerevan, Armenia), a state-of-the-art mobile
computer lab opened its doors to the library's visitors.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Berd, Mr. Andranik
Sharyan, the spiritual leader of the Armenian apostolic church in
the Berd area of Tavush region, priest Father Aram, the president of
Green Lane NGO, Dr. Nune Sarukhanyan, Project Developer of Armenian
Environmental Network, Kirk Wallace, volunteers working with Green
Lane, the staff of the library, as well as representatives of various
governmental and non-governmental organizations active in the field
    of agriculture and environmental protection.

After Farther Aram blessed the room, which would house the mobile lab,
the Mayor of Berd, Mr. Andranik Sharyan, addressed the participants of
the opening ceremony and promised to continue supporting the team of
eight librarians, all of them women, who would share the knowledge
and skills they obtained during the project with all interested
organizations and individuals in the town of Berd and its neighboring
    communities.

The librarians are very much inspired by the new opportunities created
by the introduction of up-to-date information and communication
technologies to the library. They are looking forward to having the
website of the library fully available online within a few days and
participating in computer and information literacy trainings to be
    conducted under the project.

The Green Lane team did not arrive empty-handed--they presented
interesting and valuable books and videos on organic food production,
effective farm management, perennial crops, and hothouse plants
production to the participants of the event.

The project "Harnessing ICT for Improved Farming Practices" aims to
help farmers in the Berd area of Tavush region improve both farming
practices and incomes through better access to information, education
    and services.

The participants of the project are convinced that with continued
support from Green Lane NGO and the Municipality of Berd, the library
will build the capacity and skills to improve the services and develop
new ones to successfully fulfill the educational and informational
needs of the farmers and rural population.

In addition, the library will receive a donation from a diasporan
Armenian, Mr. Raffi Kojyan. He will donate English language books,
which are very valuable gifts as the library is in need of foreign
    language literature.

The project is still developing and improving, and the library and
its visitors are looking forward to more success stories!
