The deputy rector of Linguistic University, Gabriel Balayan, has been
appointed its acting rector, Education Minister Armen Ashotyan told
journalists today.
He confessed that he does not understand the position of the former
rector Suren Zolyan, which said he is not going to leave the position.
The minister recalled that Zolyan was dismissed from the position
by the order dated 17 April and he does not have a right to sign and
endorse the inner acts of the university.
He also added that there is no political context in Zolyan's dismissal
which cannot be linked with electoral processes. "This is not the
war of damaging information. All our steps are judicially grounded
and we are ready to prove our rightness in the court", - he said.
To recall, on April 17 Armenian Minister of Education and Science
Armen Ashotyan signed a decree on dismissal of Souren Zolyan from the
post of the Rector of the Yerevan State Linguistic University and on
termination of the labor contract signed with Zolyan on 17 March 2008.
The press service of the Ministry reported that the dismissal was
preceded by two disciplinary sanctions imposed on Zolyan on April
6 and April 17. The first severe reprimand was for the fact that
Zolyan ignored Armen Ashotyan's instruction not to leave Armenia over
the period from 19 to 23 March and devolved his responsibility upon
another person. The second reprimand was the response to the numerous
violations revealed at the Yerevan State Linguistic University during
the inspection carried out by the Ministry on March 20-27.
At present Suren Zolyan and about 50 students of the university have
been holding a protest action in front of the building of Armenian
Education and Science University.
