ZHARANGUTIUN PARTY VOWS TO ATTRACT $1.5 BILLION TO ARMENIA IF COMES TO POWER

YEREVAN, April 19. /ARKA/. Zharangutiun (Heritage) party promises
in its election program to attract investments totaling $1.5 billion
to Armenia, enlarge the share of taxes in GDP and rid the country of
monopolies if comes to power, Hovsep Khurshudyan, the party spokesman,
said on Thursday.
He said that the party is guided by particular programs which are
able to ensure economic development to Armenia.
"In the recent five years, only Zharangutiun faction remained stuck
to its programs and voted in the parliament reasoning from these
programs," he said. "Now we present the New Armenia program, which
implies composition of a new government," he said.
Khurshudyan said that all segments of the economy, especially
profitable, are divided among tycoons, and small and mid-scale
entrepreneurs are left with no option but to be satisfied with the
remains left to them, such as taxi services and bakery business.
"The core areas which influence price-making process are monopolized,"
he said.
The party spokesman said that Zharangutiun also proposes to cut taxes,
increase pensions and wages and fill the government budget by lessening
shady dealings.
The party believes that it will be able to enlarge the share of taxes
in GDP already in the first year alone from the current 17% to 23%
by tightening grip on shadow economy and extracting money from it.
Zharangutiun will also implement a program aimed at repatriation
of Armenian citizens to their homeland with their own capital and
investments.
"We think Armenia, with its 2.5 million living in a region full of
challenges, can't have any future," Khurshudyan said. "We should
enlarge our population as soon as possible, and it is possible to do
it only by returning Armenians to their homeland. As many as 100,000
Armenians should be back - many of them has accomplished a great
deal abroad."
He said that these people will prefer to live in a free and democratic
Armenia rather than to be viewed as second- or third-class persons
in foreign countries.
Zharangutiun (Heritage), a national liberal party, was founded in 2002
by Raffi Hovhannisian, a former foreign minister. Zharangutiun known
as a western-leaning party has some 5,000 members and the smallest
faction is the National Assembly - six MPs. The party leader has
close ties with Armenian community in the United States.
In the upcoming parliamentary elections, Zharangutiun will have eight
rivals - seven parties and one party bloc.
