If the issue of releasing Vahagn Chakhalyan, the leader of the United
Javakhk movement fails to be settled before the New Year, it will be
clear in a fortnight, Arnold Stepanyan, Chairman of the Multinational
Georgia movement, told Tert.am.
He estimates the probability of Chakhalyan's release at 30%.
The December 21 amnesty bill adopted by Georgia's parliament applies
to Vahagn Chakhalyan as well.
Chakhalyan has been in prison since July 21, 2008, and has served more
than ¼ of his term.
He has been sentenced to ten years in prison.
`It is difficult to say if Vahagn Chakhalyan will be released. It is
important that Georgia's new authorities show necessary political
will.
There are disagreements among the local government bodies and
different political groups. I find it difficult to say how the issue
will be settled,' Mr Stepanyan said.
The local Armenian community will do its best for Chakhalyan to be
released, he said.
