Junior Achievement Holds its 19th Annual Summer camp
One hundred forty students representing 140 different schools participated
in the Junior Achievement summer camp held from July 16 to 23 in
Dzaghkadzor. The students earned the privilege of being embraced in this
most unique activity by scoring a high grade on a written exam. The
mission of the camp is to congregate the brightest of students and to
strengthen their understanding and appreciation for free market economics
and civil society. In this connection, all the activities designed for
camp are educational and come to serve this purpose. While at camp, among
other activities, the students conduct elections to form a government ,
write and present a business plan on a given topic and hold a debate on
matters of concern to the public.
An important part of the 7 day program is also to have guest lecturers who
speak on issues of interest to the students . The guests this year were
Vazgen Manukyan, President of Public Service, His Excellency Jonathan
James Aves, Ambassador of the UK, Mr. Ralph Yirikian, General Manager of
VivaCell MTS, Mr. Gagik Danieliyn, CEO of Coca Cola Hellenic Bottling
Company in Armenia, Mr. Armen Ashodyan, Minister of Education, Mr. Ruben
Melikyan, deputy Minister of Justice and young writer and author of the
book Family of Shadows, Garin K. Hovannisian.
Mr. Ralph Yirikian shared his impressions of the meeting with the students
'. ''The junior achievement starts with the readiness to change the
knowledge to civilized and flexible manner. It is necessary for the
development of the country and the youth establishment. I have an
impression that the people gathered at this camp wish to choose this way''.
Ambassador Aves concluded `It was a delight to meet such a lively group
of young people. I was impressed by the range and thoughtfulness of the
questions they asked me. The JAA is to be commended for running this
program which gives young Armenians the opportunity to develop their
leadership skills and broaden their horizons'.
The Junior Achievement program is an educational program called
Entrepreneurial and Civic Activism of Young People of Armenia which is
financed by USAID. The program offers students practical experience in
forming and running a student business company. As part of their business
activities, the students establish and run `mini-companies,' They elect
their managers, conduct marketing research, write business plans,
manufacture a product or offer a service, and design advertising and sales
strategies. As part of their learning experience and Corporate Social
Responsibility practice, they also allocate a portion of their profits to
carry out community-oriented projects. Students receive guidance about
their businesses from JAA teachers as well as consultants from companies
such as VivaCell-MTS, Mary Kay, Megerian Carpet, Armenia Marriott Hotel,
HSBC Bank, Kanaka Construction, the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company,
and the Republican Union of Employers of Armenia.
