On Mar. 6, Artak Karapetyan, who is imprisoned in Artik penitentiary,
sewed his mouth shut and announced a hunger strike. Artak's attorney
Tamara Yayloyan, conveying the words of Artak's father to Epress.am,
said that though Artak removed the seams on his mouth, he hasn't
terminated his hunger strike. According to head of the public relations
division of the RA Ministry of Justice's Penitentiary Service Gor
Ghlechyan, Artak is in a solitary cell under the supervision of
doctors.
Artak began his hunger strike because he is displeased with his court
trial, which, according to him, if it continues this way won't uncover
the case.
Recall, Artak Karapetyan is accused of willful murder, though his
attorney insists what her client is guilty of is hooliganism, not
murder. According to the charges, Artak cursed at and attacked Dr.
Ashot Grigoryan, 65, who responded to an emergency call to help
his father, as a result of which the doctor died. At the last court
session, the attorney motioned for the body to be disinterred and
another autopsy performed, which the court refused. The defense
insists that the disinterment and subsequent autopsy could determine
that the doctor didn't die from Artak's blows.
The attorney also made a motion to uncover the facts related to Dr.
Grigoryan having received treatment in a drug clinic. To the
investigation body's queries, the drug clinic in question affirmed
that Dr. Grigoryan was suffering from alcoholism and received
appropriate treatment. This fact, however, wasn't conveyed to the
medical examiners, which also displeased the defense.
The trial continued at 1 pm today during which time the defense
attorney motioned for the results of the autopsy to state what drug
the nurse injected into the doctor's body to resuscitate him and
could it perhaps have led to his death?
