RUSSIA TO RESPOND TO U.S. ANTIMISSILE DEFENSE PROGRAM IN EUROPE IN FIVE YEARS

Russia will face the necessity of response steps to the U.S. program
on locating antimissile defense elements in Europe in five years,
Russia's deputy minister of defense Anatoly Antonov told in an
interview to Rossiyskaya gazetta newspaper.
'When the Americans will pass to the implementation of the 3d phase of
their antimissile program and endanger the efficiency of application
of our strategic nuclear forces, Russia will have to undertake
response steps. According to the assessments of the General Staff,
it may happen already in 2017,' Antonov said.
In his words, the first and third phases of the American program
should not be ignored either. 'It is a time when the basis is being
put for upgrading the antimissile defense system. Moreover, it is
not being spoken about the 5th, 6th and 7th phases. Such developments
are possible and we are getting prepared to it. President of Russia
has many times spoken about the possible response steps,' the deputy
minister said.
At a television interview with five TV channels, Dmitry Medvedev said
that there are 5-7 years for the solution of the antimissile defense
system in Europe and if talks with the USA fail Moscow will start
locating missiles.
Russia has stated that the program threats its territorial security
and demands guarantees from the American side.
