The religious sects may radically affect the results of election in
Armenia. For instance, if an unknown party appears and pays to the
leaders of the sects, it may be absolutely sure to find itself in
the parliament at least in its minority, the head of Rehabilitation
Centre for the victims of destructive cults, Aleksandr Amaryan,
told journalists today.
"The religious structures and sects have been taking an active part in
the public and political life of our country. This is not surprising,
taking into consideration the fact that at present there are 230 thsd
people involved in the religious sects of Armenia. This is 10% of the
total number of voters", he said. In this context, he said that it
would be quite fruitful to cooperate with Jehovah's Witnesses. At the
moment, their number in Armenia is nearly 11 thousand, the expert said.
He also said that the political parties of Armenia and the religious
sects are closely cooperating. He added that the religious sects are
cooperating with Armenian National Congress, Heritage Party. At the
same time, Aramyan assured the journalists that the ruling Republican
Party of Armenia is not cooperating with the sects, however, his
assurance was rather ungrounded.
He added that religion and business are closely linked with each other
in Armenia. According to him, the religious structures have divided
all the profitable businesses among each other. For instance, sales of
gold and diamonds are concentrated in the hands of Jehovah's Witnesses,
urban construction - in the hands of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints, the food products - in the hands of Evangelists,
etc. Amaryan said that there is no collision of business interests
among all these sectarian businessmen; on the contrary, their close
cooperation is based on the principle of mutual support.
