ETERNAL LOVE SINGER CHARLES AZNAVOUR CELEBRATES HIS 88 ANNIVERSARY

YEREVAN, MAY 22, ARMENPRESS: May 22 marks the 88 anniversary of the
world famous love singer Charles Aznavour . Armenian-French singer,
songwriter, actor, public activist and diplomat, the son of Armenian
immigrants Michael Aznavourian and Knar Baghdasarian Shahnou r
Vaghenagi Aznavourian was born May 22, 1924 in Paris. In child hood
little Charles was taken to theatre, in 1940 sang in Cabaret with
Pier Rosh.
The first song "I'm drunk" (1944), performed by George Ulmiyer was
awarded '~RYear CD'~R nomination, though the future world famous
artist was not popular with the audience for a long time. Global
fame of Aznavour came in 1956, after the successive performance in
Paris'~R Olympia'~R hall. The French press was saturated with Aznavour
phenomena. He has written about eight hundred songs. Aznavour is the
author of the international hits as following Bohemia, Il faut savoir,
Ave Maria, She and etc. Those songs have been performed by Celine Dion,
Laura Pausini, Josh Groban, Placido Domingo .
One hundred million of Aznavour's CDs have been sold. American "Time"
magazine poll called Aznavour as the "Artist of the century". He was
awarded the highest medals by French and Armenian state authorities.
Aznavour starred the film Francois Truffaut's Tirez sur le pianiste,
and in the 2002 movie Ararat playing Edward Saroyan, a movie director.
Since the 1988 earthquake in Armenia, Aznavour has been helping
the country through his charity. There is a square named after
him in central Yerevan on Abovian Street, and a statue erected in
Gyumri. In 1995 Charles Aznavour was appointed an Ambassador and
Permanent Delegate of Armenia to UNESCO. Aznavour is a member of the
Armenia Fund International Board of Trustees. Great chansonier has
a Museum-House in Yerevan, inaugurated in 2011 October.
Aznavour is Armenian permanent representative in Geneva UN Office and
other international organizations. He is the Ambassador Extraordinary
and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to Armenia.
