The catholicos of the Holy See of Cilicia, His Holiness Aram I, has
congratulated the Armenian nation on the 21st anniversary of independence.
In a greeting address posted on the Catholicosate's Facebook page, the
patriarch praises the Armenians' efficient spirit and conscious commitment
for re-building an independent state after decades of the Soviet rule.
`After centuries' sufferings and persecutions, the Armenian nation created
its independence on May 28, 1918. Shortly after, unfortunately, Armenia
lost its independence and remained under the socialist regime for decades.
On September 21, 1991, Armenia regained its independence thanks to our
people's efficient spirit and conscious commitment,' he says.
The Catholicos further calls for joint efforts towards maintaining and
strengthening the independence.
`Independence alone does not suffice [us]. The important thing is to
maintain that independence and make it more powerful. Armenia now belongs
to all Armenians, hence the strengthening of the Republic of Armenia is the
duty of every Armenian. By saying strengthening, we mean the nation's firm
attachment to its motherland,' he says, emphasizing the importance of such
factors as raising the nation's leaving standards, contributing to its
cultural prosperity, strengthening government bodies, expanding Armenia's
international relations and reinforcing the army.
The patriarch notes that the above efforts will succeed in case all
Armenians unanimously commit themselves to the innermost desire to build a
homeland.
Addressing the challenges of the Syrian-Armenians, he re-affirms the appeal
to assist the community in this difficult period. `The Syrian-Armenians'
alarm is a pan-national matter that needs exactly this kind of approach. It
is necessary, without any discrimination, to lend a helping hand to the
Armenians of Syria today; tomorrow may be too late.'
The Catholicos further explains that several Syrian-Armenian families are
now in Lebanon out of tight circumstances. `The Armenians of Syria are our
brothers and sisters; they are not our guests. This is how we have to
approach them, and keep the doors of our houses, clubs, churches and
workplaces widely open to them, having in mind the highest aspirations to
be useful to them. We are sure that they have to settle in Lebanon
temporarily, and once the situation in Syria calms down, they will return
to their homes and work to assist in restoring and re-organizing the
Armenian community of Syria,' he added.
At the end, the patriarch calls on the prelate of the Lebanese-Armenian
diocese, as well as the National Authorities and all organizations to
provide maximum assistance to the sons of the Armenian nation in Syria.
